You will be given assignments about every two weeks. The basic marking scheme for these assignments will be ``pass'' (A, full marks)/``fail'' (F, zero marks), but up to 10% ``bonus'' marks will be awarded for exceptionally good solutions (A+). In exceptional circumstances (when about half the assignment has been completed successfully) a B (half marks) may be awarded. You are not allowed to collaborate in doing your assignments. Two (or more) similar assignments will receive automatically an F, no matter their correctness.
A mid-term test will cover the material up to and including context-free languages. It is thus tentatively scheduled in the eigth week of the term. A final examination will cover primarily the remainder of the course material, but it will also consider to some extent material previously covered by the mid-term test.
All the written tests are open-book.
Grading will be based on a number of assignments (20%), one mid-term test (30%), and a final examination (50%). There will be no supplemental examinations.
Grading will be based on a number of assignments (20%), one mid-term test (30%), and a final examination (50%). You will also be asked to prepare a research paper on a topic not presented in class. The actual topic will be established by yoour instructor in due course. The research paper will give you 25%. The grade thus obtained will then be converted to an equivalent grade out of 100. There will be no supplemental examinations.
Should you require special accommodations because of a disability, please come and discuss this with me at the begining of the term. I will not take into consideration requests made on or after the day in which the first assignment is released. You must also contact the Counselling Resource Centre to obtain authorization for any special arrangements.
