Pre/Corequisite You must have a suitable grade in NB Math 112 and 122 (or its equivalent).
Text Applied Mathematics (Third edition)
by S. T. Tan (Thompson/Brooks/Cole, 2004)
Calculator A scientific calculator is needed for the course. You should bring the calculator to class to make sure you can follow along. You must have a permuation button, nPr, combination button, nCr, factorial button, n!, and exponent button y^x or x^y.
Syllabus We will attempt to cover the following sections of the text, though not necessarily in this order.
  • Sets, Counting and Probability (7.1-7.7, 8.1-8.3)
  • Mathematics of Finance (4.1-4.3), Linear Equations (2.1-2.2, 2.5)
  • Matrices and Linear Systems (5.1-5.6), Linear Programming (6.1-6.3)
Grades You must bring your student ID with you to the midterm and final exam.
  1. Assignments (10%): Due at the start of class on Fridays.
    NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE MARKED
  2. Midterm/Exam (30%) each: February 2, 2005, February 23, 2005, and TBA
